January 30: Envisioning and Extra Energy

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

Thomas Edison

Happy Week 4!

Our Acton East Mountains arcade is taking shape! In other words, when you come to the exhibition, be ready for a good time. This week, learners have been working their way through perhaps the most challenging part of the engineering design process–the testing and rebuilding phase. It’s been a great chance for learners to practice a growth mindset, curiosity, and openness to feedback. Each time, they are refining their final product so that it will be as entertaining as it can possibly be.

A few individual studio updates…

The energy in the Los Lobos studio this month is probably best described as, well, frenetic. In a launch the other day, learners decided that they are having trouble finding focus because they have extra energy they are not getting out. Their solution was to add in an extra 30-minute workout right after our morning launch. Today was our first day of trying this experiment, and it seemed like many of the learners definitely expended some energy!

In the Mai-Coh studio this week, learners spent time envisioning the kind of school environment they would most like to build. This centered around creating a studio that is welcoming to others and respectful of others and a space where individuals can trust and be trusted. Mai-Coh learners have also been working on making sure goals are achievable but also powerful enough to move them forward on their badge plans.

Badges earned this week

Congratulations to…

Questions we’ve explored this week

  • What are some hidden talents you have? What are the hidden talents of the people around you?
  • What makes it the hardest for you to find focus: your body needs to get some energy out, you want more time to talk to your friends, or your work is not engaging to you?
  • What kind of environment makes you feel welcome? What role does trust play in creating a welcoming environment?
